2019 KC Area Youth Jazz LP

In addition to performing modern jazz masterworks by composers like Charlie Parker, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Bobby Watson, and Gil Evans among many others, YOUTH JAZZ Fellows perform music written specifically for them.

YOUTH JAZZ Artistic Director will select and approach composer-in-residence candidates based upon the programming goals of the organization.

Composers are welcome to apply for a YOUTH JAZZ residency by sending a letter of request for consideration, a short bio, a website link and a sample of work.

NOTE: Composers are compensated professionals.

Title: 2019 Fellows

"I'm working on music to capture the vibe and energy of the KC scene," said Dr. Arthur White, who serves as the Composer-In-Residence for the 2019 KC Area Youth Jazz season. "I've spent a significant amount of time here and the city speaks to my soul."

Dr. White said among the six original compositions he's writing for the 2019 KCAYJ Fellows to perform and record this season are works that honor jazz greats such as Joe Henderson, Charlie Parker, and Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers.

"I have a Snarky Puppy-inspired funk melody in my head that needs to go to paper," White said. "I hope the music I'm writing reflects KC while I infuse my own personality into this project. It's such an honor to write for these talented young artists."
