2022 SEASON KANSAS CITY AREA YOUTH JAZZ

Kansas City Area Youth Jazz has the capacity for presenting and recording a total of four ensembles depending upon the number of qualified candidates who pass the audition for a fellowship. The four named ensembles are as follows:
  • The Brady Ensemble, The Smith Ensemble, The Crain Ensemble, and The Watson Ensemble.

Fellowships are available for each of the four ensembles and are awarded to the most qualified musician candidates to fill the following base instrumentation:

  • (1) trumpet,
  • (1) alto saxophone,
  • (1) tenor saxophone,
  • (1) trombone,
  • (1) piano,
  • (1) bassist, and
  • (1) drum set.

Ultimately each ensemble this season can be a quintet, sextet, septet, or octet made up of various combinations of instrumentation. Awarding supplemental fellowships for a guitarist, a vibraphonist, a percussionist, and/ or a vocalist to any of the ensembles will only be considered if the candidates are extremely high level musicians.

Youth Jazz is a unique program based in Creative Youth Development (CYD). CYD describes programs that blend excellence in artistic instruction with principles of positive youth development.

2022 SEASON AUDITION DEMOGRAPHICS

Youth Jazz Alumni come from cities and towns throughout the Kansas City metropolitan area. KC is a bi-state metropolitan area anchored by Kansas City, Missouri. Its 14 counties straddle the border between the U.S. states of Missouri (9 counties) and Kansas (5 counties). With 8,472 square miles (21,940 km) and a population of more than 2.2 million people, it is the second-largest metropolitan area centered in Missouri (after Greater St. Louis) and is the largest metropolitan area in Kansas, though Wichita is the largest metropolitan area centered in Kansas. Alongside Kansas City, Missouri, these are the suburbs with populations above 100,000: Overland Park, Kansas; Kansas City, Kansas; Olathe, Kansas; Independence, Missouri; and Lee’s Summit, Missouri.

Participants include literally all ethnicities, genders, and economic backgrounds. As a youth artist music industry experience, Youth Jazz Fellowships are talent-based and awarded objectively through merit. The program is free to participants in order to eliminate any possible financial or economic barriers. Following is an overview of where the 2022 cohort comes from:

2022 SEASON FELLOWSHIP QUALIFICATIONS

THE KANSAS CITY AREA YOUTH JAZZ AUDITION 🎵

We ask prospective fellows to prepare:

  • (1) a Jazz standard with improvisation,
  • (2) Improvise over the F blues form, and
  • (3) Play all 12 major scales in 60 seconds.
  • (4) We conduct a personal interview that requires a commitment to attending all rehearsals, concerts, and recording sessions.
  • Drum Set candidates must demonstrate the ability to play all styles and grooves common to Jazz music.

Auditions for a Youth Jazz Fellowship are purposely rigorous and very competitive.

We accept the best qualified candidates who audition for fellowships each season.

And, if you are interested in participating in the Kansas City Area Youth Jazz program but need to further refine and develop competencies and skills in the above audition areas, don't let that stop you from trying - we encourage all developing next generation artists to practice and also study with a qualified applied jazz music teacher privately. We also recommend participating in the great KC-based jazz developmental programs like the Kansas City Jazz Academy, Future Jazz, 5 Star Jazz Band, etc. Thanks for your interest in Kansas City Area Youth Jazz.

TECHNICAL NOTE: We use the iRealPro app for backing Horn Players, Pianists, Bassists, and Drummers.
